Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mom, grandmother, and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young teenager. Ford was attracted to acting in her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she wasn't a good fit. Ford was then able to apply for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Her classmate were Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she already had made her TV debut on the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, that were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
